Lawn Mowing Tips

Lawn mowing may seem like a simple task that requires little thought or consideration, but your lawn can suffer greatly from this assumption. Some common mistakes people make when it comes to lawn mowing is not mowing frequently enough, cutting the grass too short and not sharpening the mower’s blades at least once a season, if not more. When the proper steps aren’t taken to mow your lawn correctly, it becomes susceptible to disease and insect infestation, while also becoming a haven for weed development.

Mowing your lawn should take place at least once a week, depending on how much or little rain you have received. If the grass grows more quickly, you might have to mow more than once a week. Always make sure that you do not cut more than 1/3 of the blade. Cutting too much at one time will hinder root growth and literally scorch the blades. The idea is to cut when necessary to ensure a 1-1/2”-3” blade length and allow the grass clippings to decompose back into the lawn, acting as natural compost that enriches the soil beneath it.
All of this becomes pointless if you’re not using sharpened mower blades. Dull blades pull and tear at the grass rather than slice. If the grass isn’t sliced, it can become brown and more vulnerable to disease.

Watering Tips for Your Lawn

Watering your lawn might seem a pretty mundane, no-brainer task. Millions of Americans spend their spring and summer evenings watering their lawns before heading inside. But even in the hot summer months, when and how much water your lawn receives can be a crucial step to maintaining a healthy turf.

Ever wonder why it seems you have to mow your lawn more than once a week? Well put your lawnmower and gas can away, and while you’re at it, the garden hose as well. Watering enhances grass growth. Especially in months of hot, damaging and dry weather, keeping your lawn under-watered can stop it from growing wildly, thus exposing it to the elements that cause it to go dry and brown.

However, if you insist upon frequent watering of your lawn, make sure you water it early in the morning, typically around 5 a.m. while humidity is still high and the dew is still present. Watering in the morning rather than in the evening will save your lawn from dangerous diseases. A mere ¾- 1” of water a week is sufficient, but when rainfall is on the horizon, let nature do the watering. Without flooding it, soak your grass to promote root stimulation. It’s also important to make sure all parts of the turf have been saturated to prevent unsightly dry patches from forming.

Weedy Perennial Grasses

Weeds are a consistent oppressor of your lawn. Annual and perennial grasses, or weeds, can deplete your lawn of much-needed nutrients and water, leaving it dry and brittle. Our appplications combat annual grasses with pre-emergent weed control that kills off crabgrass and foxtail without damaging your lawn while preventing weed germination. Perennial grasses such as quackgrass and tall fescue, however, are more challenging to control and reduce.

Tips for Other Problems in Your Lawn

Moles

Moles can be destructive to the integrity of your lawn, leaving unsightly holes on the surface and underneath their burrows can be detrimental to your safety if you fall through. Moles also take quite a toll on your lawn by disrupting the root system, creating a roadblock for water and nutrients to reach the dangling roots.

Milwaukee Lawn Care
Controlling Moles

To really get rid of moles, you need to get rid of their food source. Insect control plays a large part in eradicating moles from your lawn because if there is no food source, the moles will be forced to move on to another area. However this is not the only method. Let us set harpoon or choker mole traps and/or fumigate the burrows in your lawn with poisonous gas. Another method of eliminating moles is to cut your grass short in the fall months in order to make the ground beneath less warm in the winter an uninhabitable for these critters.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are caused by decomposing material underneath the soil, such as rotting wood, animals and other organic material. Mushrooms, much like weeds, steal much-needed water and nutrients from your lawn, causing turf to weaken and dry out.

Controlling Mushrooms

Mushrooms are hard to get rid of on a permanent basis and any treatment will more than likely have to be repetitive in order to get rid of them once and for all. In order to get rid of groups of mushrooms for good, you need to remove whatever is underneath the surface that is decomposing and replace the soil. Poking holes, or aerating, the soil will help the decomposition increase when dealing with individual mushrooms, rather than groups.

Aeration

Imperative for a beautiful, healthy and thatch-free lawn, core aeration involves removing small plugs of soil, allowing grass roots to swell. This enables them to take in more water and necessary nutrients, promoting lush, green grass. Aeration also assists in thatch decomposition, allowing more oxygen to access the grass. In addition to these benefits, aeration also increases the effectiveness of fertilization treatments and allows saturated soil to dry out more quickly.

All Season Lawn Care and Landscaping offers aeration in the spring and fall at very reasonable prices. Please call us if you are interested in this valuable and effective service that alleviates soil compaction and ventilates your grass roots.

Insects In Your Lawn

Insects can be beneficial to your lawn in several ways, but unfortunately there are a few species that can have the exact opposite effect. Our insect control program will help control insect infestations before they cause expensive damage and completely kill your lawn. If your lawn is becoming discolored and thin, chances are insects are the culprits.

Chinch Bugs

Chinch bugs feed on plant fluids within leaf sheaths in the thatch, killing the grass and permitting weeds to populate. They have black bodies that are 1/16” long, unless they are nymphs, in which case they are smaller with a red and black band on their abdomen. These lawn pests are prevalent during the months of June into September when the weather tends to be hot and dry. Their presence can cause your lawn to turn yellow and patchy, looking much like dehydrated turf. If left untreated, the grass will die completely and quackgrass will begin to appear.

Sod Webworm

Sod webworms are the offspring of sod webworm moths. They come out at night to feed off your lawn’s roots, depleting its supply of water and nutrients. These bugs are able to eat up to four square feet of grass during their stay in your lawn, and are likely to be the most destructive during the summer months. Damage from sod webworms is easily noticeable, as their feeding causes large patches of your lawn to brown and die.

Grubs

Grubs can cause considerable damage to your lawn in the form of brown, thinning patches of grass. These bugs are June or Japanese beetle larvae that feed on the roots of your lawn, causing it to turn brown and die, much like sod webworms. If your lawn is being destroyed by lawn, you need to take action immediately as if left untreated, the affected areas will have to be completely replaced. If you have brown patches on your lawn, try to pull back the turf. If it is loose and can easily be pulled back, you more than likely will find grubs underneath.

Lawn Diseases

Lawn disease can be just as destructive as insects, but more often than not, they can be prevented through proper nourishment, mowing and watering habits, and keeping a close eye out for any changes in your lawn’s appearance. All Season’s lawn disease specialists will always survey your lawn for any early signs of disease.

Dollar Spot

Fungi are a major cause of lawn diseases. Dollar spot is one such disease. It does not discriminate and can be found on any type of turf. The lawn shows damage in small, silver dollar-sized irregular spots and the grass itself can appear white or tan with reddish-brown borders.

Brown Patch

Brown patch usually occurs during periods of high humidity with light rainfall. The blades of grass fade in color and have small black spores, a sign that the blade is dying. The affected lawn as a whole will begin to appear yellow and depressed, giving it a blemished appearance. It is important to have brown patch diagnosed by a lawn care expert, as it is easily confused with dollar spot and other lawn issues.

Wisconsin Lawn Care
Necrotic Ring Spot

Necrotic ring is known to affect many varieties of Kentucky bluegrass and sometimes goes undetected in its early stages when the damaged areas appear as small, blue-green patches. However, within days a “frogeye” pattern will manifest and you will see a light tan or reddish-brown ring with green grass existing in the middle of the dead turf. Necrotic ring spot often occurs near sidewalks and driveways where the heat radiates off the concrete and into the grass.
